The vote by aldermen of the Hobart City Council to fly a rainbow flag at its offices in Hobart shows how little they understand the consequences of changing the legal definition of marriage, according to Tasmanian spokesperson for the Coalition for Marriage, Ben Smith.

“The role of municipal councils is to oversee the provision of services and administration of local government. They are not elected to tell us what to think. They are not elected to impose their personal views on rate payers.

“The Hobart City Council aldermen who voted to display the rainbow flag have evidently not reflected on the consequences of changing the legal definition of marriage. There is no safe way of changing the legal definition of marriage without limiting freedom of speech and conscience, as has occurred in other countries around the world. I urge Tasmanians to look at the very serious consequences that will flow from any change to the legal definition of marriage in Australia.”
